Environmental crimes fines are down by 27,9%

In the first couple of months of 2019, Ibama applied 27.9% less environmental fines and other penalties in comparison with Jan-Feb/2018. The numbers confirmed Bolsonaro’s campaign promises to combat an “industry of environmental fines” inside Ibama. Bolsonaro was fined due to illegal fishing inside a protected area by an Ibama agent in 2012 and since then has been targeting the inspectors. Since taking office, Ricardo Salles, Minister of Environment, has been following the same line with regards to IBAMA’s work.
