Government starts building an electricity lines in Waimiri Atroari Indigenous Territory
Waimiri Atroari leaders are denouncing the lack of dialogue with the federal government regarding the beginning of the Tucuruà electricity works, which will cut through their territory.
The energy transmission line, which will connect Manaus (AM) to Boa Vista (RR), will be 720 kilometers long, of which 123 will cut through indigenous territory. According to the Socio-environmental Institute (ISA), the community found out about the beginning of construction via the press.
On August 11, the Waimiri Atroari Association delivered to the government a proposal for compensation for the social and environmental damage cause by the construction in a meeting with the Enviro agency Ibama, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and State Public Ministry (MPE) and indigenous leaders, but received no response.
