General Heleno authorizes the advance of garimpo in an untouched area of the Amazon

In 2021, the minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) of the Presidency, General Augusto Heleno, authorized seven research projects for gold mining in a protected area of the Amazon, in the region of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), bordering Colombia and Venezuela.

Considered one of Jair Bolsonaro’s main advisors, Heleno is responsible in the government for allowing or vetoing mining projects in the country’s border areas.
