Mercury levels at Madeira River (AM) are up to three times higher than the established by WHO

A Federal Police report, part of a new phase of the Uiara operation against illegal mining in the Madeira River, in Amazonas state, indicated contamination by mercury in residents of the region in a level of up to three times higher than the limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the document, the level of mercury in water is 15 to 95 times higher than what is acceptable for consumption and recreational use.
