Decision that excluded civil society from environmental council is revoked by the Supreme Court

Justice Rosa Weber, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), suspended a decree issued by Jair Bolsonaro and an inheritance from the administration of Ricardo Salles at the Environment Ministry that reduced the participation of civil society in the National Environmental Council (Conama), the main environmental policy council of the country.

The decree had placed the Conama in the hands of the government and agribusiness, removing civil society, indigenous and environmental associations, going from 96 to 23 seats.

In the same week, the STF had declared unconstitutional a norm of Salles revoking protection in mangroves opening the way for land speculation.
