Bolsonaro hires coal energy until 2040

While coal is being abandoned as a source of energy because its burning affects significantly to climate change throughout the globe, President Jair Bolsonaro has sanctioned a bill that determines the extension of the contracts of the Jorge Lacerda Thermoelectric Complex, in southern Santa Catarina, until 2040.

The measure guarantees the contracting of the energy generated in the thermoelectric plants by the national electricity system until the mentioned date, at an annual cost of R$ 840 million for the Brazilian tax payer, according to an estimate by the Association of Large Industrial Energy Consumers and Free Consumers (ABRACE).
