Historic flood displaces more than 3000 families in Pará state
Located between the Itacaiúnas and Tocantins rivers, the city of Marabá, in southwest Pará, faced one of its largest floods in the last 20 years. Due to the heavy rains, the overflowing rivers left 2,975 families homeless, in addition to 435 families stranded in riverside regions, according to an story by Folha de S. Paulo.
The National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation (ANA) indicated that rainfall in the first half of January exceeded 80% of the expected for the whole month, anticipating the floods that typically started in the months of February and March in previous years.
In addition to Marabá, the municipalities of Aveiro, Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Itupiranga, Pau D’Arco, Rurópolis, São João do Araguaia and Trairão also declared state of emergency due to the high volume of rains.
