With a new decree, the government regulates wind energy parks on the Brazilian coast
Through Decree 10,946, published in the Official Gazette by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Bolsonaro administration regulated the installation of wind farms on the country’s coast for energy generation using sea winds.
According to an article by O Estado de SĂŁo Paulo, the measure “should accelerate the progress of energy generation projects that already add up to more than 40,000 megawatts of energy and that are under environmental analysis by the environmental agency IBAMA”, an energy amount four times greater than that of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, the largest in the country, much criticized by environmentalists for its socio-environmental impact.
So far, 23 wind farms have been requested from the environmental agency, to be installed in Bahia, Ceará, EspĂrito Santo, PiauĂ, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul.
In a note, the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (AbeeĂłlica) celebrated the measure as an important step by Brazil in the fight against global warming.
