Amazon reaches record high in deforestation in April

A new study published by the the Institute of Man and Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) indicates that the biome lost 1,191 square kilometers of forest in April. That’s the worst rate in the last 15 years, since the organization started satellite monitoring in 2008. In relation to 2021, there was a 54% increase in deforestation for the period. The area cut down is equivalent to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

According to G1, the Imazon data confirm the information from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) released earlier this month about the period.

At the top of the list among the states that have deforested the most is Mato Grosso, for the fourth consecutive month, responsible for 31% of deforestation in the region (372 km²), in second place is Amazonas, responsible for 29% (348 km²), and in third place Pará, responsible for 20% (243 km²).
